Christmas will be coming early for me this year, specifically over the weekend of the 11th and 12th October. Play Expo is the biggest gaming convention in the north of England and the event will be returning to Manchester's exhibition centre 'MediaCity'. There will be 5 unique zones to experience over the weekend and I plan to fully immerse myself in them all.
now.play will be the area that focuses on current gaming hardware and the latest titles for them. Last year attendees got the chance to try first hand Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag on the PS4, which at that time was not even on sale to the public. You can also listen to developers talk about the games they have created and at the same time ask them questions.
re.play is going to be the place where I will be spending most of my time. Essentially it's the place to relive your childhood with classic arcade and pinball machines, retro game consoles and LAN parties for games such as Quake and Doom. There's also an opportunity to purchase game cartridges and other merchandise from retro traders, so here's hoping TiredMummyofTwo gives me some spending money.
pro.play is where all the hardcore gamers look to pit their intellect against each other in pay-to-enter tournaments. Players will be able to play tournaments in FIFA, Street Fighter, Mario Kart plus many more. There will also be free to enter tournaments for amateur looking to have a bit of fun.
cos.play is where the most dedicated fans turn up to take part in 'costume play'. There will be competitions, parades and short skits being performed on stage. Also in this area you will find tables set up for playing card and board games.
screen.play dedicates itself to the stars of film, TV and video games. You can meet and greet well known celebrities and have photo opportunities with film props/movie cars.
Unfortunately the wife and I were unable to attend last year's event, but if you want the inside scoop please check out geekmummy's review.
